AMK GEN SECY DELIVERS LECTURE AT USA

AUSTIN (USA) APR 8: Stating that Kashmiri language is one of the oldest in South Asia, general secretary of Adbee Markaz Kamraz (AMK) Syed Shujaat Bukhari underlined need to rejuvenate the efforts to preserve it.

Delivering a lecture on “Renaissance of Kashmiri Language and Literature” at the South Asia Institute of University of Texas at Austin, Bukhari said that there are many theories about the origin of this language but scholars have consensus on thing that it comes from Dardic group of languages. He said that language took a formal shape in 14th century with the arrival of Lal Ded on scene and the mission to popularize Kashmiri was then carried forward by Sheikul Alam Sheikh Nooruddin Noorani.

Looking at the upheavals it faced he said it has suffered indifference on part of government but noted with optimism that “now the language is re-introduced in schools which is a significant step towards its renaissance”. A good number of students and scholars attended the lecture and took part in the discussion. Dr Snehal Shingvi introduced the speaker and the subject to the audience.
